Curfew reimposed in downtown Srinagar

Curfew restrictions were reimposed in downtown Srinagar on Wednesday after the city was rocked by protest demonstrations on Tuesday when the restrictions had been lifted after 17 days.

Officials here said the fresh restrictions were imposed in view of the clashes that took place at different places in downtown areas of the Srinagar city on Tuesday. Over a dozen persons got injured in these clashes, while a 61-years old man died after receiving head injuries after he lost control over his two-wheeler during clashes between protesters and police and CRPF personnel in Eidgah area on Tuesday.

Curfew restrictions are also enforced in major towns of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Awantipora in south Kashmir, which has been the epicentre of present unrest. The curfew is being enforced strictly in Kulgam area to prevent the separatists’ call for march to Kulgam today, officials said here.

Meanwhile, private mobile services have been restored in the Valley after nearly two weeks, even as mobile Internet services continued to remain suspended for the past 18 days. The restrictions were imposed to restrict “rumour mongering” following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani in Kokernag area of South Kashmir on July 8.

The clashes that followed have so far claimed at least 48 lives and caused injuries to nearly 5,600 persons, including 2,228 J&K Police personnel, 1,100 CRPF men and 2,259 civilians. The Valley has been continuing to remain under curfew and restrictions and general strikes called jointly by separatist leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik.
