The sub-centre of the University of Kashmir (KU), established in Jammu to facilitate students who migrated from the Valley after the eruption of militancy, is all set to expand its campus in the winter capital after 27 years.

The sub-office of the Directorate of Distance Education, KU, which is functioning from a private building near the Marble market in the Greater Kailash area is now in the process of shifting to its new building within a few days.

Presently, only two professional courses i.e. Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Master of Education (MEd) are being run by the university through the distance mode. Another study-cum-information centre is also established in the Gandhi Nagar area.

Sources claimed that when the sub-centre was established, the militancy-affected students who left their studies midway due to the turmoil in the Valley had enrolled themselves in the centre to complete the undergraduate programmes.

“Due to low enrolment of students for the undergraduate courses, the courses were stopped with the passage of time as it is already mentioned in the University Act that if there are less than 60 students in the first year then the course cannot be run,” an official claimed.

“Right now, we are focusing only on BEd and MEd courses with the available infrastructure. Thousands of students who had migrated from the Valley were benefitted from this centre to pursue their studies, who otherwise had lost hope to continue it,” official added.

Mohammad Abdullah, assistant registrar and in charge of the sub-office, told The Tribune: “Yes, we are likely to shift to a new building within 10 to 12 days at Bhatindi. The classes of the students pursuing courses form this centre were earlier being conducted at the Government College of Education on Canal road because we were short of space. However, now the classes can be conducted at the new building.”

When asked about the possibility of restarting the undergraduate programmes, Mohammad Abdullah said: “As far as restarting the undergraduate programmes is concerned, the decisionis to be taken by the higher authorities.”

Pertinently, the University of Kashmir established the Directorate of Distance Education in 1976 with the view to impart education in different disciplines through the Open and Distance Learning mode. The Directorate of Distance Education has been offering many academic courses and programmes.
