On World Press Freedom Day, students and faculty at the Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir (CUK), today asked the editors’ body in Kashmir to safeguard free speech in the Valley.

The event was held at the Nowgam campus of the university where participants shared their thoughts on the issues confronting journalism as an institution. The coordinator, DCJ, Asif Khan referred to the significance of the day and how it came into being. “Khan emphasised the role and significance of the newly formed Kashmir Editors’ Guild in safeguarding freedom of press in the Valley,” officials said. Senior faculty member Shahnaz Bashir said the crux of the problem of press freedom was engendered in the tussle between the power of freedom and the freedom of power. — TNS
