Enthusiasm marks first CUJ convocation

JAMMU: Enthusiasm marked the maiden convocation of the Central University of Jammu (CUJ) where 14 students were awarded PhD degrees, 20 were given MPhil degrees and 43 got gold medals.

Enthusiasm marked the maiden convocation of the Central University of Jammu (CUJ) where 14 students were awarded PhD degrees, 20 were given MPhil degrees and 43 got gold medals. Besides, 885 postgraduate students were also awarded degrees on the occasion.

The university came into existence on August 8, 2011, but the convocation was held for the first time on Sunday. The students, who passed out from the university till 2017, were awarded degrees and gold medals.

Union Minister of State in Prime Minister Office Jitendra Singh and former Chief of Army NC Vij were awarded Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) degrees by Vice Chancellor Prof Ashok Aima.

In his speech, Jitendra Singh said he accepted the degree as a token of love, affection and recognition from Jammu which he had served for a better part of his life.

He said the CUJ should focus on unique contribution towards scientific education and in future, it could emerge as a centre of excellence. Stressing India had a bright future, he said by 2030, it would have the youngest skilled workforce which would boost the economy of the world.

In his address, General Vij said India was emerging as a world power and the whole world was looking towards the nation’s economy. “The youth should choose defence as their profession,” he said.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor presented the university report from August 8, 2011, to March 15, 2018. He lauded the achievements of institutions in the arena of science and technology, education and curriculum.

Highlighting that 47 research projects were started by the university, Prof Aima complimented the faculty and students who were involved in these.

He also stressed the technological advancements of the university, including the automated library, Wi-Fi availability and smart cards.

He said the university had spent over Rs 352 crore for infrastructural development till date while an amount of Rs 157 crore had been provided for the constructing academic blocks. “At present, there are 1,379 students from various parts of the country, studying in different academic and research programmes in various disciplines,” the VC said.

14 PhDs awarded

On its first convocation on Sunday, the Central University of Jammu awarded PhD degrees to 14 students and MPhil to 20 students. A total of 43 students received gold medals. Besides, 885 postgraduate students were also awarded degrees on the occasion.
