Srinagar, December 6

A day after Farooq Abdullah offered partnership to the separatist leadership, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today said the statement had proved that the National Conference had a “role” in the violence during the nearly five-month-long unrest in Kashmir and it now wanted the situation to deteriorate again.

“The statement of Farooq Saheb telling his party workers to lend full support to the Hurriyat makes one thing clear which we did not mention till now that the NC can go to any extent for power. In the last four-five months, the criminal elements entered the situation here who threw stones on vehicles, burnt schools and attacked camps. So, the statement makes it clear that the NC was involved in such activities in these months,” Mehbooba told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar.

She said the NC did not want peace to return in Kashmir and its patron had hence asked workers to extend support to the current turmoil.

“Now when the situation is improving, children are going to school and tourism is also picking up slowly, Farooq Saheb has once again asked his workers, giving them an order, to create that situation once again in which the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir will remain charged,” she said.

On Monday, NC president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had said his party was ready to follow the separatists “till they are on the right path and were leading the nation in the right direction”.

Mehbooba said Farooq’s statement had proved that the party would play with the lives of anyone, including children and women, to grab power.

“He (Farooq) is not concerned about the struggle because since 1947, the NC has only struggled for power. Even today I feel that, in his statement yesterday he has indirectly asked his workers not to let the situation improve because they want power at any cost. Otherwise, Omar has been a minister in the BJP government. He has talked against Pakistan at the national and international levels, saying that it should be labelled as a terror state,” she said.

Govt to strengthen sports infra

Mehbooba today assured the students and children that the state government would do all it takes to provide an ambient environment for their physical and mental development.

Interacting with the students and players of various educational institutions of the Valley here, the CM said physical activities were a must along with studies and government would make all efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure in the state.

She asked them to participate in sports activities and emulate role models such as Parvez Rasool, Tajamul Islam and others.  The participants observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away in Chennai last night.
