FIR filed against lawyers for terming Afzal, Bhat heroes

SRINAGAR: The J&K Police have registered a case against laywers and their agents for allegedly pasting posters in a Srinagar court premises wherein they termed Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat as the heroes of Kashmir and described Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev as the heroes of India.

The J&K Police have registered a case against laywers and their agents for allegedly pasting posters in a Srinagar court premises wherein they termed Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat as the heroes of Kashmir and described Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev as the heroes of India.

The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Batamaloo police station under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

The FIR was lodged on February 9, the fifth death anniversary of Afzal Guru. He was hanged and buried in the Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013, after his mercy petition was dismissed by then President Pranab Mukherjee.

Maqbool Bhat, the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front founder, was hanged and buried in Tihar on February 11, 1984.

According to the FIR, the Batamaloo police station, through reliable sources, received information about a poster with photographs of Maqbool Bhat, Afzal Guru, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev pasted by some lawyers and their agents on the Sadar court premises of Srinagar.

“The poster posted by lawyers has shown Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru as the heroes of Kashmir and Bhagat Singh and Rajguru as the heroes of India. These lawyers often paste posters of terrorists with an intention to secede the territory of Kashmir from the Union of India and to harm the integrity of India.

“The act of lawyers amounts to the offence under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Hence, the FIR is registered and investigation taken up,” the FIR read.

A police officer said they had video evidence and they would identify the lawyers.
