The state government has issued a food safety advisory for flood-prone areas to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases during monsoon.

The advisory has been issued by the Commissionerate of Food Safety.

Due to population growth and illegal constructions along flood channels and river banks in recent years, threat of floods during heavy rains has become common.

Taking lessons from the 2014 floods, the state administration is making every effort to reach out to people through various mediums to create awareness on health issues during wet season.

“The post-flood situation is always dangerous. Preventive measures is the only way to avoid the spread of water-borne diseases such as jaundice, dysentery and diarrhoea. Silt, sewerage, oil and chemical waste get mixed with water, which contaminate food and sources of drinking water,” said Dr Abdul Kabir Dar, Commissioner, Food Safety, J&K.
