Govt schools fare badly

Dismal performance of government schools in the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) examinations has once again come to fore with 20 government schools scoring zero pass percentage in Class X exams, results of which were declared here today.

As many as 30 government schools recorded dismal pass percentage from 2 to 10, notwithstanding the state government spending millions of rupees on the handsome salaries being given to the “well-qualified” teachers in these schools.

On May 20, at least 25 Government Higher Secondary Schools (GHSSs) had recorded either zero per cent or less than 20 per cent result in Class XII exams after the JKBOSE declared results for the Jammu province. Official sources in JKBOSE told The Tribune that 20 government schools recorded zero per cent result in Class X exams today and some of these schools were located in the city, where the teachers had outnumbered students. For instance, Government High School, Gole Panjpeer, Talab Tillo, is located within the municipal limits of the city and it recorded zero per cent result with all five students failing in the exams.

Similarly, Government High School, Chatta Sunjwan, which is also located in the vicinity of the city, also scored zero per cent result as all the 13 students who appeared in the exams failed. Other government schools, which scored zero percent result in Class X exams today are Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Karkhal Akhnoor, Government High School (GHS) Tarah, Government Girls High School (GGHS), Kalayan, RS Pura, Government Boys High School, Rangpur Maulania, Government Boys High School, Phinder, GHS, Haripur, GHS Thana, GHS, Bagla, GGHS, Degwar (T), GHS, Azmatabad, GHS, Badakana, GHS, Dodaja Darhal, GHS, Khorinar, GGHS, Degwar (M), GHS, Jhandi, GHS, Samotha, GHSS, Samotha and GHS, Bagodh.

The pass percentage in government schools — GHS, Jangal Gali, GHS, Nathal, GHS, Kotamaira, GHS, Gurha Manhasna, Akhnoor, GGHS, Keri, GGHSS, Poonch, and GHSS, Panassa — was between two and five.

Sources said only one student from government schools, namely Ritika Sharma of Government High School Malhar, found place in the merit list of top 20 positions, which were shared by about 360 students. The government schools had fared badly in Class X exams over the years. In 2012, as many as 161 government schools had registered pass percentage of below 25 in Class X exams in the Jammu province, while 332 government schools had recorded the pass percentage of below 25 in 2011.

The board officials questioned the poor performance of students studying in government schools as the teachers in government schools were more qualified and competent besides drawing hefty salaries compared to private schools. The poor results showed lack of sincerity on their part, besides faulty education system which needed an immediate overhauling.
