Guv allocates Rs 1.09 crore for Leh welfare projects

SRINAGAR: Governor NN Vohra has reviewed the progress of developmental works in Leh district of Ladakh, stressing the need for expeditious completion of ongoing Central sector schemes, and directed ensuring annual health check-ups, immunisation and vaccination of all schoolchildren.

Governor NN Vohra has reviewed the progress of developmental works in Leh district of Ladakh, stressing the need for expeditious completion of ongoing Central sector schemes, and directed ensuring annual health check-ups, immunisation and vaccination of all schoolchildren.

After arriving at Leh on Tuesday, the Governor held a meeting with Thupstan Chhewang, MP; Chering Dorjay, MLC and former minister; Nawang Rigzin Zora, MLA, and former minister and representatives of political parties. The legislators raised a number of issues and sought increased capital allocations for Leh district and completion of all pending works.

The Governor also held extensive discussions with the executive councillors of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, all of whom raised demands for larger allocations and urgent completion of long-pending works.

The review meeting with district officials of Leh chaired by the Governor discussed in detail the entire range of developmental issues of the district. Avni Lavasa, District Development Commissioner, in her presentation highlighted the state of developmental works in the district, progress of ongoing schemes, impediments in the completion of works and other major issues pertaining to the district. 

Reviewing the progress of the roads and bridges sector, the Governor emphasised the urgent need for expeditious completion of ongoing Central sector schemes, particularly those which had been going on for more than three years. He urged the engineers to not only ensure timely completion of the projects but also take due cognisance of the quality of the works being executed. The Governor directed the Principal Secretary, Planning, Development and Monitoring Department, to ensure that funds for transfer of utilities be made available to the district on a most-urgent basis before July 25.

In regard to the education sector, the Governor directed the Leh CEO to ensure annual health check-ups, immunisation and vaccination of all schoolchildren and provision of power, drinking water, toilets and boundary walls in all schools. He directed the district administration and the sectoral officials to concentrate on the high potential in the district to grow vegetables, flowers, fruits and milk and directed the Deputy Commissioner to ensure that milk and vegetable produce of the district found a ready market among the various security establishments in Leh.

Various demands were made by the Deputy Commissioner regarding requirement of funds for ongoing projects in the district. The Governor issued on-the-spot orders for the release of Rs 1.09 crore for a few road sector projects and directed the Secretary, Planning Development and Monitoring Department, to examine all pending liabilities of the Border Area Development Programme and Tribal Sub Plan in the district. He directed the District Development Commissioner to prioritise her entire list of demands, based on the felt needs of the district, and submit a comprehensive proposal, along with the fund requirements, by July 25. 

The Governor was accompanied by his Advisers, Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary, Planning, Development and Monitoring Department.
