A division bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court today asked the state government to provide foolproof security to the non-local students of the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar.

Responding to the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Jammu for India convener Hari Om seeking directions to ensure the safety of the students at NIT-Srinagar, the division bench observed that the Advocate General, who was present in the Court, had been requested to ensure foolproof security of the students at NIT-Srinagar.

The Advocate General was also told by the court to ensure free and fearless movement of NIT students and conduct examinations for the outstation students who could not appear for them.

The division bench further said that in so far as other prayers made in the writ petition were concerned, anyone was free to approach the authorities concerned by making a request.

The division bench comprised Chief Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur. BS Salathia and Ravinder Sharma submitted the PIL while Advocate General DC Raina appeared for the state.

The court observed that there was no direction as prayed for in the writ petition but the authorities running the administration were expected to ensure the safety of all students irrespective of the state they belong to.
