The Power Development Department (PDD) has added 100 MW more to its distribution supply on the directions of Governor NN Vohra to provide relief to people in the harsh winters.

Residents in both metered and non-metered areas across Kashmir have been protesting against unscheduled power cuts. In Srinagar, many parts of the city are metered, but the frequent load shedding has added to the woes of people.

Chief Engineer of the PDD Bashir Ahmad Khan, said many stakeholders in Kashmir such as hoteliers’ associations and transporters, had approached him and raised query about power cuts which the department said had improved from the last week due to extra 100 MW supply.

“The Governor directed us to add more supply so that people get maximum supply. The distribution mechanism has been improved from the last week as we have added more supply mainly during prime evening hours,” the official said.

“We have seized hundreds of heaters and boilers from people since the last three weeks. people are continuously indulging in thefts and non-judicious use of electricity which is increasing unscheduled cuts. They should also cooperate and use electricity judiciously,” the official said. The Chief Engineer said employees of the department were working hard to ensure power supply in winters in all parts of Kashmir. “Our department even works during night hours to repair faults,” he said.
