The National Investigation Agency (NIA) today questioned separatist leader and National Front chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan over the alleged funding from Pakistan to fuel unrest in Kashmir.

Sources said Khan was summoned by the NIA for questioning.

Khan has been at the centre of a sting operation in which he accepted money to fuel last year unrest. Following the sting operation, the chairman of the separatist amalgam Syed Ali Geelani had on Saturday suspended the membership of the National Front, led by Khan.

The NIA had already questioned Farooq Ahmed Dar, alias Bitta Karate, and Gazi Javed Baba of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in the case.

A five-member NIA team had arrived in Srinagar on Thursday to question separatist leaders after the NIA registered a preliminary inquiry into the funding of Hurriyat Conference leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Naeem Khan, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Gazi Javed Baba and others in J&K by Hafiz Muhammed Saeed and other Pakistan-based militants and agencies to carry out subversive activities in Kashmir and for damaging public property, stone-throwing on the security forces, burning of schools and other government establishments.

Gunfight erupts in Pulwama

Srinagar: A gunfight is underway between security forces and militants in Pulwama district of south Kashmir. The gunfight erupted on Tuesday evening at Harkipora Kakpora, Pulwama, when a joint team of the Army, police and CRPF cordoned off the village following information about the presence of some militants. Sources said as the cordon was laid around the village, militants fired at security personnel, which was retaliated, triggering a gunfight. “The anti-militancy operation is underway,” the sources said.
