Peoples Democratic Party leader and Member of Parliament Muzaffar Hussain Baig today said he would have no objection to Mehbooba Mufti becoming the Chief Minister.

“Why should I object? Whatever decision the party makes, I will not have any objection to that. She is like my younger sister,” Baig told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar held by the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) to celebrate Constitution Day.

“She is a very hardworking lady and has done tremendous work,” Baig said. He further said: “In a democracy, you have go by the decision of the majority.”

The PDP leader, who is also one of founder members of the party, has been critical of the functioning of the PDP-BJP government and has stayed away from party meetings.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public rally in Srinagar recently, Baig had written an open letter to Modi and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on the rising intolerance in the country.

While speaking at the seminar today, Baig said the family rule had plagued the democracy in the subcontinent, including India.

In his speech, Baig was critical of intolerance in the country. “The minorities in India are feeling insecure.”

Baig said despite diversity on account of religion, culture and languages, India as a country was still together.

“There was no problem with the Constitution of India, but some necessary amendments were needed at present,” he said.
