OIC decision on Jerusalem historic: Mirwaiz

SRINAGAR: Moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has hailed the decision of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), declaring Jerusalem as the capital of the occupied Palestine as ‘historic and bold’.

Srinagar, December 14

Moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has hailed the decision of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), declaring Jerusalem as the capital of the occupied Palestine as ‘historic and bold’.

In a statement today, Mirwaiz, whose faction of Hurriyat also has an observer status at the 57-nation grouping of the Muslim countries, hoped that apart from Palestine, the OIC along with the United Nations would also play its “positive role” in resolving the “70-year-old Kashmir dispute”.

During an ‘extraordinary’ summit on Wednesday, the OIC declared East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine while rejecting the US stance as “dangerous” and called on the international community to follow in its footsteps.

At the summit held in Turkey a week after US President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the Muslim leaders called on all countries to “recognise the state of Palestine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital”. Terming the OIC decision as “encouraging and historical”, Mirwaiz said this decision had “completely isolated” the US. —TNS
