The inability of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to rectify even minor water supply snags has led to another chaos among the residents of the old Rehari area who are suffering without water for the past four days.
In June, a major breakdown had occurred at Mian Dido Chowk, Ambphalla, which left large areas of old Rehari, Sarwal, Panjtirthi and Ambphalla without water for nearly 20 days.
Three months later, the same problem has occurred again in the old city areas and the Assistant Executive Engineer concerned, Sanjeev Gupta has promised that his men were on the job and water supply would be restored within a day or two.
Earlier, for the restoration of water supply, new pipes were laid and people of the area had even bought new pipes of their own to help the department rectify the damage.
In between, since the secretariat is presently in Srinagar, people of the area were seen standing in serpentine queues opposite the secretariat to get water.
“When the secretariat is in Jammu, the area remains cordoned off for six months. If such a breakage had happened that time, we would have been left without a single drop of water,” said Rajat Gulati, 24, a shopkeeper and resident of the area.
