Congress resolution says govt policies ‘anti-people’

The Congress today passed a resolution saying it will back the sections affected by the ‘anti-people’ policies of the PDP-BJP coalition government. The Congress will also observe May 5 as Black Day and stage a protest outside the Civil Secretariat when the Darbar Move offices here scheduled to reopen.

After a day-long convention presided by J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president G A Mir, the party passed a resolution where it expressed concern over the ‘politics of opportunism’ by the PDP in forging an ‘unholy alliance with the BJP for the sake of power’. It said the alliance had led to ‘large-scale resentment and unrest’ among the people of the state, especially the Valley. 

The resolution alleged that the coalition partners were pitting the people of Kashmir and Jammu regions against each other and were ‘polarizing the polity of the state’.

It flayed the government for the new recruitment policy for outsourcing of recruitment in the police and failure to adopt any policy towards regularization of daily wagers.

“This convention reiterates its resolve to continue to lend its unequivocal support to the genuine demands of these categories of people and the issues of various sections of the people, especially the poor and down trodden, farmers and the unemployed youth, besides the suffering sections of the society, including the displaced people. It resolves to play the role of a constructive and vibrant opposition to seek effective response to the genuine needs of the people and to check the anti-people policies of the present dispensation in the state,” the resolution said.

“This coalition has vitiated the atmosphere in the Kashmir Valley by their contradictory decisions and rhetoric on various sensitive issues with no clear policy to deal with the situation. The recent incidents of militant strikes and innocent killings have further shaken the confidence of the people in and outside of the state,” it added.

To protest against these policies, the Congress convention unanimously resolved to observe May 5 as Black Day to expose the ‘anti-poor’ policies. The convention also urged the party cadres to gear up for the forthcoming urban local bodies election. Senior Congress leaders Peerzada Mohammad Syed, Taj Mohi U-Din, Gulam Nabi Monga, Muzaffar Parray and Usman Majeed, among others, attended the convention.
