The police today said an engineering student of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) here has apparently joined militancy. The matter first came to light in the social media and is being investigated by the district police.

The student has been identified as Mohammad Eisa Fazli, a resident of Shadab Colony near Soura in Srinagar. A third-year engineering student, Fazli left the university on August 15. Sources said Fazli was good in studies and had been among the 31 students selected for six-month industrial training in June.

The sources said that when Fazli was in the Kashmir valley from June to August, he might have come in contact with militants, who lured him into militancy.

“Instead of taking admission in the 7th semester, he left the university on August 15 along with his belongings without intimating the authorities concerned,” said a source.

The Rajouri police began a preliminary investigation after a Facebook post on August 17 announced that Fazli had joined militancy. The police questioned Fazli’s roommates in the university. The Facebook post stated that Fazli was a spiritual person and was delivering lectures to other students in BGSBU on jihad from a book written by Imam Ibn Nuhas Rahimallah

“Taking suo motu notice of the Facebook post, the Rajouri police on Monday visited the BGSBU campus and hostel and questioned students,” said SSP, Rajouri, Yougal Manhas. Sameer Raina, BGSBU spokesman, said when Fazli was found missing, his parents were contacted on August 17.

“A response from Fazli’s parents is still awaited. After social media reports about Fazli, the university authorities reported the matter to the district administration and the police for further action,” said Raina.
