Three key separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, who refer to themselves as joint resistance leadership, on Wednesday sent a petition to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), demanding the establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the human rights violations in Kashmir.

The petition describes the overall situation of the abuse of human rights by the security forces in Kashmir with references to a number of instances of such abuse which necessitate the establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry, the separatists said in a statement.

It cited the recent report by the UNHRC High Commissioner which has detailed the human rights violations in Kashmir.
