Srinagar, January 23

The transporter strike against the tax hike threw normal life out of gear in the Valley today.

All modes of public transport, including private buses, taxis and autorickshaws, remained off the road causing inconvenience to the commuters. Bus drivers were also seen enforcing the strike this morning in areas where a few vehicles tried to ply.

Drivers of passenger vehicles have demanded withdrawal of the yearly passenger welfare fund and hike in fees of fitness certificate and other documents.

Passenger vehicle owners of the Jammu region had also called for a strike earlier, but withdrew it on Sunday evening after a meeting with Chief Secretary BR Sharma.

However, the ones in Kashmir went ahead with the strike today.
