Miscreants set two passenger vehicles ablaze on the outskirts of Srinagar today for violating the protest calendar of separatists even as the Valley had been witnessing increased movement on roads.

Two Sumos were on their way from north Kashmir to Srinagar when the vehicles were intercepted by some masked men at Parimpora early this morning for violating the shutdown call.

The passengers were asked to alight and petrol bombs thrown on the vehicles, causing extensive damage, the police said. “In an attempt to disrupt traffic, some miscreants set two vehicles on fire near the fruit mandi,” said a police spokesman. Six miscreants involved in the incident were identified and a manhunt launched, he added.

“There was normal movement of traffic with shops remaining open and vendors dotting roads, lanes and bylanes across Kashmir,” the spokesman said this evening.

Over the past more than a week, the Kashmir valley had witnessed increased movement on roads in the summer capital, major towns and highways. Separatists had been jointly issuing weekly protest calendars. Though restricted to a few hours in the evening, traffic on roads and movemnet in markets had brought about a change in the overall situation.

Door-to-door search in Baramulla, 30 detained

A first major search operation was launched on Monday by the security forces in volatile old Baramulla town after inputs about the presence of militants in the area. The house-to-house search was launched after an input about militants, the police said. State police sleuths were accompanied by CRPF and Rashtriya Rifles men in the search. “During the operation, we detained around 30 persons suspected to be involved in the militancy. During investigation, if anyone is found innocent, we will release him,” said Senior Superintended Police, Baramulla, Imtiyaz Hussain, who supervised the operation, a first of its kind in the kashmir hinterland after the unrest broke out following the killing of militant Burhan Wani on July 8. During the unrest, Baramulla witnessed two militant attacks, one targeting a military convoy and the other targeting an Army base. TNS

Hizb to form separate group for Sikh youth in Kashmir

In a fresh video, the new poster boy of Hizbul Mujahideen, Zakir Rashid Bhat, has said his militant outfit will form a separate group of Sikh youth to fight against the security forces in Kashmir. “We have been receiving requests from the oppressed Sikh youth to join us. We support them and will try to make their separate group to fight against India,” said Zakir in a three-minute video shot at an unidentified location in recent weeks. Sitting on a chair and dressed in military camouflage, Zakir, who is believed to have replaced slain Hizb commander Burhan Wani, holds a grenade in his hand with three Kalashnikov assault rifles on his both sides in the video. “India wanted to repeat Operation Blue Star in Kashmir. India removed Pandits from Kashmir to easily kill Muslims but it failed,” he said while requesting the Kashmiri Pandits to return to their homes. TNS
