Governor NN Vohra attended the 4th International Day of Yoga celebrations organised by the Directorate of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy, J&K, at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex early Thursday morning.
He observed that yoga was a scientific method maintaining the health and balance of mind and body. He said the yoga techniques had now been reoriented to suit the modern sociological needs and lifestyles, thereby helping in mitigation of diseases and promotion of health.
Emphasising the importance of yoga for physical and mental fitness, the Governor stressed that it should be taught in educational institutions and there should also be special arrangements for teaching it to senior citizens.
Earlier, Vohra practiced various asanas conducted by yoga expert Deepak Sharma. More than 1,000 people participated in the session.
Meanwhile, the day was also celebrated at the lawns of Raj Bhawan, where experts from the Yoga Society of Kashmir conducted a 45-minute session. Vohra along with First Lady Usha Vohra, Principal Secretary to Governor Umang Narula, secretariat and security staff of Raj Bhawan participated.
Valley students flex their muscles too
Srinagar: The Central University of Kashmir celebrated the International Day of Yoga on Thursday, which was attended by over 300 participants. Officials said the day was observed at the department of students welfare in collaboration with the Government College of Physical Education, Ganderbal; Directorate of the Indian System of Medicine; and the J&K Department of Youth Services and Sports, at the College of Physical Education stadium at Ganderbal on Thursday. Addressing the participants, Piyush Singh, District Development Commissioner, Ganderbal, said the day was celebrated across the world with enthusiasm. He asked the participants to perform yoga everyday in order to counter ailments that otherwise need medication. TNS
