Fly high on vocational wings

Aviation is the fastest growing industry globally providing a host of employment opportunities to youngsters.

Aditi Raina

Aviation is the fastest growing industry globally providing a host of employment opportunities to youngsters. From ground-duty jobs to flying in the air,  this field offers job options where the pay is good and one also gets a chance to travel across the world. As the footprint of the aviation industry grows in the northern region, the job opportunities for those interested in getting into this field have also multiplied. “Chandigarh is now the central link for many destinations because of which Singapore Airlines, Emirates, British Airways and many others are eyeing this centre to expand their operations. This has widened the scope for job aspirants in the aviation sector,” says K S Kohli, Chairman, Frankfinn group. The 25-year-old institute has trained more than 60,000 students in Chandigarh in the past 10 years, out of which 70 to 80 per cent candidates have got placements in major airlines. Cabin crew training and travel and ticketing courses prepare students for the industry on a fast-track mode. Short-term vocational courses in this domain offer another gateway to students to get a “high-flying” job  immediately after the completion of their degree course. In Chandigarh, for the inauguration of the state-of-the-art centre last week, Kohli talked about the job avenues in this profession. Excerpts from an interview:

Aviation industry is on an upswing in India. How has this affected the job scenario?

This is a sunrise sector. More than Rs 1, 00,000 crore will be invested in this sector by 2022. Such a huge investment will open a lot of avenues for candidates looking for jobs in this domain. There will be a need for more cabin crew  candidates and on-ground jobs. The investment will lead to higher employment.

What course options are available for students wanting to get into this field?

There are one year courses to train students for cabin crew jobs, ticketing, and tourism and hospitality industry.  The eligibility criteria for these courses  is Class XII. These are intensive and job-oriented courses that  equip the students for industry needs. Once a student enrolls for this course, he/she is trained in many skills like personality development, communication skills and overall grooming. The training provided is not only aviation industry- based, so that even if a student doesn’t make it to one industry, he can still try for other jobs.

Are there any short-term courses, too, in this domain?

At our institute we are offering a three-month course for  graduates  who want to join as cabin crew. The course is for boys as well as now a number of boys are also being selected by airlines.  This course trains the candidate for the hospitality industry, too, in which the students  have the option of  choosing travel and customer relation services.

What is the USP of three-month vocational course being offered by your institute?

This 350+ hour course is a complete practical tour for the candidates where main focus is on personality and grooming. Sessions related to  attire, hairstyles, dressing  are taken and leadership skills  are also taught.  The quality that others get in one year here you are getting in just three months which prepares you for the profession.

It is thought that the career span in this industry is very short. Comment.

This is a myth. If a person is fit and maintains the physical standards then one can continue for a longer time. It is a glamour perceived profession not a glamorous profession. It’s totally upon you; if you lose your charm or are unable to maintain yourself then you’ll have to land on the ground job.

What are the industry tie-ups that your institute has?

We have a non-funded partnership with NSDC; all the students get a certification from NSDC. We also have a tie-up with the Institute of Commercial Management, UK, which gives a credit transfer facility.  We also have an association with Air India wherein students are trained byit and are awarded a certificate. Indigo Airlines, too,  gives  training for Galileo travel software which is widely used in the profession, to our students.

Fee Structure

Fee structure for the one year course is Rs 1,30,000 and for the three months course it's Rs 1,00,000.
