Tips for the eleventh hour

As the examination date of JEE Main 2018 draws closer, it is time that students geared up for the D-day. Revise as much and attempt as many mock tests as possible. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already released the admit cards. This is a sign enough for students to pull up their socks and pursue a systematic exam-oriented preparation approach for best results. It is imperative for all JEE aspirants to give equal weightage to all three subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Math. With less than a month left for this competitive exam, only a well-planned timetable along with the appropriate preparation can yield excellent results.

Here’s how students can prepare subject-wise and score good marks in the upcoming JEE Main examination:

1 Physics: Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics and Thermal Physics are the most scoring and the least time-consuming parts of Physics. Modern Physics and Thermal Physics are mostly formula and calculation-based sections that require students to memorise a whole lot. Ensure that you learn the concepts of Optics thoroughly in order to easily solve the questions.

Revise the most difficult and vast topic of Mechanics towards the end.

Some of the important chapters include: Thermodynamics, Optics, Atomic Structure, Current and Electricity, Rotational Mechanics, Units and Measurement, Semiconductors, Rotation and Fluids.

2 Chemistry: Chemistry is a scoring subject if students have conceptual clarity and have gone through their NCERT textbooks thoroughly. Chemistry can be divided into three parts: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. Physical Chemistry is the easiest part as most of the questions in this section are application based. Organic Chemistry can be scoring if students have mastered all the reactions well. Most of the questions in JEE exam test how well you have understood the mechanisms of the reaction. Inorganic chemistry is a time-consuming section, as it requires reading and memorising each and every aspect of the set of reactions.

Some of the important chapters include: Equilibrium, Mole Concept, Chemical Kinetics, Liquid Solutions, Benzene, Aldehydes and Ketones, Amino Acids and all of Inorganic is equally important.

Mathematics: In mathematics, efficiency is required as this is the most difficult section of all the three. The best way is to solve as many test papers as possible to master the subject. The topics that need to be given adequate attention are: Trigonometry, Vectors, Matrices, Limits and Continuity, Maxima-Minima, Definite & Indefinite Integrals, Parabola, Circles, 3D Geometry, Application of Derivatives, Complex Numbers and Probability.

Get set score

With lakhs of students vying for a seat in the premium engineering institutions of India, students need to buckle up and ace their preparations. Here are some last-minute preparation tips that can be useful:

  • Ensure all concepts are clear: During revision, extensively cover NCERT books for basic and standard questions. NCERT books form the fundamental material for JEE preparations and they should be given utmost importance at the time of revision.
  • Do not study new books and topics:  There are too many preparatory books available in the market to help you ace the exam. However, it is not advisable to buy new books and learn new concepts at the eleventh hour. This may increase your stress levels and hamper your pace of preparations.
  • Address all your doubts: You do not want to lose marks because you failed to clear your doubts on time. Seek help from instructors and get all your queries cleared well in advance.
  • Brush up all concepts: Make it a habit to revise all the theorems, formulas and other important concepts.
  • Solve as many test papers as possible:  The idea is to improve your speed and accuracy. Solve three to four test papers in a day. Ensure that you attempt the question papers within the stipulated time period.
