Gurjit Singh with Soha Ali Khan

Here’s a story of a self-made man, who while waxing eloquent about his career in the entertainment industry, credits all his accomplishments to the blessings he received. With as many as six films in his kitty, most of which are set to release this year, Gurjit Singh has worked with actors like Soha Ali Khan, Pavan Malhotra and Jaspinder Cheema, but his disposition remains unadulterated and bereft of pride.

All set for the release of his film Lovely Te Lovely, Gurjit sips from a bottle of cold coffee at The Tribune canteen, and expresses himself in all honesty and simplicity.

Passion paves way

While things come served in silverware utensils for some, others have to hone their passion with hard work, determination and perseverance; the rest is just a sorry excuse for mediocrity. For Gurjit, who was born in the middle class Sikh family in Punjab, turmoil and turbulence came on his way, but he faced adversities with courage. “I must have been in the 12th standard in a government school, when I got the opportunity of hosting a school event. Impressed with my anchoring, my classmate’s sister got me to host a game show at Rock Garden, and all these events initiated my passion towards anchoring, acting and hosting,” he says.

While Gurjit graduated from Government College for Men, Sector 11, Chandigarh, he continued doing theatre, dance, and mimicry while studying, finally pursuing masters in Indian Theatre at Panjab University.

“My parents were very supportive and they never stopped me from doing something that I really wanted to do,” replies Gurjit when asked if his parents objected to his off-beat career choice.

While Gurjit bagged a role in the film World Cup 2011 soon after completing masters, he shares that he also did a cameo and appeared in 11 episodes of a show titled Meet Mila De Rabba that was telecast on Sony Entertainment Television.

“It was while I was doing this movie and TV show that I met Gunjan Uthereja, who was then a well-known host and a friend of my room- mate in Mumbai. However, before we could finalise anything, I had to move back to my hometown as I was going through financial trouble and Gunjan even paid for my ticket,” he says. Soon after he returned, Gurjit hosted and anchored several shows, including Miss PTC Punjabi.

Gurjit’s financial resources exhausted soon after and he worked in the field of marketing, only to know that it wasn’t really his calling.

Keep listening

After working as a ‘marketing guy’ for a couple of months, Gurjit decided to audition for Big 92.7 FM and landed a job as a radio jockey, hosting a show titled Pechha Pyaar Da that was broadcast across Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala and Shimla. “I hosted the show for over two years and then through Facebook I received an invitation to audition for a show called Kachh Diya Vanga because the makers were really impressed with my turbaned look,” he says. Gurjit was selected for the show and left radio to try his hand at television, this time, in a big way, thereby hosting shows like Pind Diyan Galiyaan.

Kiss the big screen

Gurjit has already shot for Ishq Warga Love, which is set to release in January or February next year. “The film has now been bought by T-Series and they will be releasing it next year. Also, I am doing another film titled Jugni, which is an art-cum-period film and it will feature Gurchet Chitarkar and Mani Boparai too,” he says. Releasing this September, Gurjit will also be seen playing the role of brother-in-law of Soha Ali Khan in the Bollywood film titled 31st October.

“This is an interesting film based on 1984 riots and besides this film, I will be seen in two other films titled Gelo and Mann Gaye Jijaji,” he signs off.
