A happy situation

In this day and age of information overload, movies may not consume as much space in the memory bank of your mind. However, if you think hard enough, you may remember a man named Joy in the film Three Idiots... Rings a bell? Now, if that doesn’t do the trick, allow us to drop a few names (it’s quite a thing with us Indians; we love looking for connections, don’t we?), however in this case we are naming films instead of people. So, it’s Bobby Jasoos and Sonali Cable!

We know guesswork is all so annoying so, we will break the news just as it is—Bollywood actor Ali Fazal, who has acted in Three Idiots, Bobby Jasoos and Sonali Cable, was in town with Diana Penty and Abhay Deol to shoot for his up and coming film, Happy Bhaag Jayegi. Here he talks about his new film and his experience in the industry so far!

So, what brings you to the city?

Well, we are actually shooting for Happy Bhaag Jayegi and it will be releasing next year in April. The film has been directed by Aanand L. Rai and it also features Abhay Deol and Diana Penty in the lead roles.

What prompted you to take up the film?

I am very particular about the script, director and the producer of the film. So, when I got to know that I had to play the role of a Punjabi college-going boy in the film produced by Anand Ji, I was more than happy about it.

Tell us something about your role in the film?

I am playing the role of a Punjabi boy named Guddu and he is a sorted man. Quite suljha hua, like we say. Also, this is quite a different film. It’s a romcom, so you will be seeing me in a completely new avatar in this one.

You have done many unconventional films. How do you look back at your choices?

I feel that the films that I have done are quite mainstream in my opinion. Of course, they are not like the usual Bollywood masala films, but I feel that script makes the film. Bobby Jasoos didn’t work so well because it was pitched alongside two big banner films that were quite intellectually challenged, but people like experimental cinema too and I like to deviate from the regular.

What are your future projects?

I already have a series called Band Baaja Baarat on YouTube. It is the first of a kind by Yash Raj Banner as it is a web series divided in five parts, but it is made like a film. So, that’s quite interesting. Also, I have a movie called Love Affair, directed by Pooja Bhatt, coming up next year.
