Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, who is all set to judge the reality show Comedy Superstars, believes humour has more impact when it is subtle

Television? Why not? Comedy? All the more! Sonu Sood had no reason to deny an opportunity to step into audience homes every day, bringing a cheer or two, all the while scouting for the best man in the business of comedy. Even before the chain of thoughts could be put together, he was all set to judge the reality show Comedy Superstars on Sony Sab TV.

“All the while I have been doing films, mainstream, regional films, but one way you can really connect with the audience is through television. And comedy is one genre where you want to unwind, step back and enjoy the whole thing.”

Last seen in a comical role in Happy New Year, giving Sonu company would be Sushmita Sen. “Moreover, it’s a close brush with real talent with aspirants coming from smaller towns of India too.” Like he himself did; an-engineer-turned actor from Moga who travelled to Mumbai — a journey where destiny and talent both had a fair share of play.

Serious business

While comedy has always been a serious business, it’s time to take it seriously too. “I like any kind of humour when it is subtle. Like nobody is trying to make you laugh, but they are just going about their business in a serious, routine manner and the situation is funny.” He adds, “Any subject can be carried off in good humour and right spirits provided it is given an appropriate treatment. Not only as judges but even as the audience, humour is appreciated provided you know what kind of message you want to put across.”

Hands full

As for mainstream Bollywood, he has always been associated with, “A few scripts have been locked but will leave it to makers to make the announcement.” Then there’s a Telugu film in the pipeline. With so much happening on most quarters — television, films Down South and even Bollywood, what’s left is what’s awaited the most. A Punjabi film debut for the Moga boy! He assures, “That’s going to happen very soon, even came across this interesting script…a few creative decisions are left to be taken. When that happens, I want the film to be very special and really good.”

Whenever that happens, it would most likely be, “An action comedy in Punjabi; lots of entertainment with good amount of action.” Till that happens!
