Churning out a fresh beat

A twist, a spin, a loop, a bend... and everything else, pretty fresh. This is how you’d look at the music created by the new-age Punjabi music directors—music with a distinct style. They haven’t changed the music scene, but they’ve definitely added new dimensions to it, just by being open to experimentation, and placing their finger right on the pulse of the listeners. As they say, they know the beat and they are pulling it well too!

So, what’s new

Young Punjabi music directors like B Praak, Desi Crew, DJ Flow, Bunty Bains have gone ahead and made music which falls in the category of contemporary desi Punjabi.

Music director B Praak, who comes from an illustrious musical background, started his journey way too early, and is getting due for his work now, “Now, I am working with fresh and young people, who are open to new ideas.”

B Praak decided not to just stick to softer tunes, “I am making a lot of different beats now, which comes from an understanding of what kind of music the young generation wants.”

On the other hand, the Italian Punjabi music director DJ Flow of Redua fame uses live music to bring a distinctive touch to his style. “I have just presented what was already available in a distinct style,” says the singer, who is known to create music in one sitting.

Beyond Punjab

The one thing that also separates these music directors from many others is their exposure to national and international music. Most of them listen to English and Hindi music with as much passion as they listen to Punjabi music. Goldy and Satpal from Khanna are much in demand in the Punjabi music industry. These two boys have brought mixed-and-matched Asian fusion, hip hop, dancehall, drum n bass, break beats, electronic, dubstep in the Punjabi music. “These are genres which are still new to the Punjabi music industry, however, now they are being accepted as part of Punjabi tracks,” share the two.

Goldy and Satpal look at Punjabi music as a global phenomenon, “isn’t it one,” they ask, “and since it is, we bring in that international touch to our music.”

This is also a reason why many new singers want to work with these young music directors because they make music that can be played to an audience in Punjab, Mumbai and Las Vegas as well. “We are only giving a spin to our own Punjabi music, and in this spin we are getting in different genres of music, we are experimenting with beats, we are falling on the technology,” shares B Praak.

Some desi beats too

Bunty Bains from Dhanetha, Samana, Patiala is a lyricist, music composer and producer whips up something different in his genre, which is Bhangra. “This is a genre that gives the maximum scope for experimenting, I like to pad up desi tunes with a contemporary beat, this brings in what you call shehri desi touch to the song.”

For these music directors, music grows younger by the day, and to keep it young, they let it mingle with some young genres...from outside Punjab!
