Golden girl: Farah Khan

The sparkle of the ring she designed is visible in her large jewel-like eyes. There is an air of casual confidence, class, sophistication and spontaniety about Farah Khan. Eldest of the three children of Sanjay Khan, the celebrated actor, is an accomplished jewellery designer.

Speaking about her latest collection she created for Tanishq, which is the second installment of Farah Khan collection, she says, "This collection is inspired from Mughal and Persian architecture. The Mughals loved Indian flora and fauna and that's why they made several gardens. Even the monuments they made were inspired from nature having motifs of flowers, animals and birds.”

Showcasing her latest collection, she says she has created new product categories with this collection. The ear cuffs or the Kanauti have been designed to be used not only for weddings, but have a contemporariness to be worn on cocktail parties, functions and several festive occasions.

Another new product is the 'in-between finger ring' that can be worn on the finger but it looks as if one is wearing two rings. It is very stylish, international and very feminine. Showing a piece, she says, "This one having yellow diamonds depicting the feminine and masculine energy is inspired from the Taj Mahal. It had the layers of diamonds like the steps. The designs are an ingenious mix of culture, tradition, classical and contemporary, which is rich and stylish.”

Talking about her design process, she says that it starts with knowing the client better and understanding their way of life, the culture, taste, textures and colours they follow. The design process draws from the culture of the client. Sketches, colour palette and 3-D rendering are done.

"An important aspect of design is not only how it looks, but how well it feels and works,” she says. It is a long-drawn and meticulous process for creating the best quality. "But it is also very satisfying because you're creating a piece that is going to outlive its wearer, and passed to the next generation.”
