Goodbye bridal faux pas

A bridal stylist will never tell the bride what to wear.

Goodbye bridal faux pas

Manpriya Singh

A bridal stylist will never tell the bride what to wear. There are relatives stepping on each other’s toes to tender that unsolicited piece of advice. Instead a bridal stylist will first ask the bride what she wants to wear. How she envisions her look for the day? In what budget, and, how soon? A few torn sheets off a magazine would help here and only once the vital blanks have been filled in, that the hydraulic powered drill begins. “But the most challenging work as a bridal stylist would be striking a chord with the bride and the groom and even their families. Wedding shopping or planning is a very personal experience and families generally don’t want a third person involved,” Meha Bhargava, one of the first few to break into the niche field shares. It was 6 years ago she started out as image consultant through her venture Styl-Inc when she chanced upon bridal styling. “Grooming, body language and personal shopping become a major aspect of image consulting. We were already image consultants for a bride when we ended up doing her entire trousseau,” shares Meha about her first ever bride. “Then there was a bride from Toronto, a teacher getting married to an equally busy professional. Right from choosing the borders to the grooms’ pag (turban) to the palla, we did everything over Facetime and they did not have to come to India for shopping.”

Busy, clueless or NRI brides are just the kinds that need someone doing the preliminary shopping for them. Where to find what and how best to accessorise it? Adds Meha, “Once a bride from New York was having a destination wedding in Goa, with no clue where to shop for and what.”

What exactly do they do?

Stylists? Aren’t they something that celebs need to plan out their look for the event on a daily basis? Many a brides will nod, that shopping for the lehenga is a stressful, fun, emotional, exhausting, and a rewarding part of the journey. A role hitherto happily played by nieces, friends, aunts and whosoever cares to join aboard the wedding shopping party. Given today’s consumerism, the possibilities run galore and so do the restrictions, in terms of budget, time, body type and personal preferences. “From choosing the D-day outfit to taking care of the entire wedding wardrobe, we give shape to a bride’s aspirations in the best possible way,” shares Sanchi Juneja, fashion stylist from Ludhiana who has also been a stylist to Punjabi singer Sunanda Sharma and actress Oshin Brar. All set to work on a few brides the coming wedding season, she feels the need for personal shoppers and stylists has been propelled by the fact that shopping for a wedding is no more restricted to just one city or rather even country. “Saving time and effort and staying within the budget are the parameters that can’t be achieved without professional intervention,” she adds.

Bride and groom’s best friend, but borrowed!

There is someone who ought to tell the bride when she is not looking right or a certain look can’t be achieved. “From henna designs to heavy jewellery, every single thing is planned keeping the ongoing trends, venue, client’s tastes in mind. We style the couple according to each ceremony. Hiring a stylist is like adding more perfection to the couple’s appearance into their special moments,” adds Bhawdeep Singh, Ludhiana- based stylist who runs his online venture by the same name. “It’s only a matter of time before the grooms get down to hiring their personal shoppers too.”
