Diljit Dosanjh

He talks, convincingly about the sleepless nights that he spent, before the launch of his much- talked about single. With more than 1 million hits in just three days of its release, actor singer Diljit Dosanjh's track Do You Know is painting the music scene red with its internationally style video and peppy lyrics.

He takes a moment to open the conversation- "I was sure that the lyrics of the song would get a thumbs up, but I wasn't sure about the video,"says Diljit who is flooded with messages from Bollywood and from Punjab, congratulating him on the success of his track.

Diljit recalls moments from the video shoot,  when doubt and surety crossed paths, just about every day! He smiles, a satisfactory curve that spells ‘relief’. " The video is produced independently under his own label Famous Studios. The music video has been directed by Mark Staubach, who is a prominent Hollywood music video director. “Mark has made music videos for Hollywood  singers like Bruno Mars, and here he was, directing a Punjabi video," Diljit's smile now cracks up into an innocent laugh.

The making of this video was nothing shot of a task for Diljit himself. "I am bad with English, so, I wasn't very sure that the director was getting what I was trying to convey. My publicist translated every Punjabi word into English for Mark. Even then I wasn't sure about the outcome. Do You Know is shot without dancing and hoping around, it required me to give those side looks, and some close face shots," says the singer.

The shoot of the video ended with everything falling in the right place, but Diljit had inkling still. "When Mark mailed me the video, it kept lying in my DropBox for two days because I wasn’t  sure how the video had panned out. I was really nervous, I thought jey video changa na baneya, saarey paise dub jaangey." He is not going to mince words here.

It was finally a case of a Happy Ending, "all is well that ends well," says Diljit as he sneaks a quick glance to check his cell phone.

"After Udta Punjab and Ek Kudi, this is my next big track," shares Diljit who has dedicated Do You Know for all his fans. "This single goes to all my Punjabi, non-Punjabi and International fans. Do You Know is for all those who saw me on screen for the first time in Udta Punjab."

Expectations and the pressure to perform even better has doubled up, Diljit happily acknowledges these two demands, but never succumbs to them. "I am trying to do my best. I will start shooting for Anurag Singh's Super Singh soon, and another single as well." In addition to this, there is another big thing at hand, "I want to learn English, this is my New Year Resolution for 2017," he flashes that honest smile.

Give it a miss

Popular Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh opted out of Milan Luthria’s Baadshaho after he felt that he would not be able to do justice to the role offered to him. Baadshaho is a thriller movie set in the period of 1975-77 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared Emergency. “Milan sir is a nice director. The role that I was offered I felt I would not be able to justify. It was a nice role. But I couldn’t relate to the character. I felt I couldn’t just do it. I did speak to Milan sir after that (referring to not doing the film),” said Diljit. Now that Emraan Hashni has stepped into his shoes, Diljit is quite happy about it. “I am fan of his (Emraan) work. God bless him. Emraan will do good work,” he adds. —PTI

The write act

It is for the first time that Diljit Dosanjh has teamed up with lyricist Jaani and music director B Praak from Chandigarh for the song. Jaani, who has written many hit Punjabi tracks, took nearly two years to come up with ‘the right’ song for Diljit Dosanjh. "I would virtually go blank each time bhaji would ask me if I’d written any new song. I wanted to a write a song befitting his stature. One day, I met him in Mumbai and told him about the half- baked song Do You Know that I’d written. He took a liking to the lyrics immediately, that’s when he told me that this is ‘the’ song he would be shooting his next video on," shares Jaani who has also worked on the composition of the song. As for B Praak, “Diljit Dosanjh is an amazing artiste.”
