There was a time when fitness was just another word for her. And gym was something that other people went to. TV actress Priya Bathija couldn’t take care less. “I started gymming quite late in life, after 26. Before that there was no time also, thanks to daily soaps and reality shows. After pack-up, you want to go home straight,” shares the actress of Kasamh Se and Kitni Mohabbat Hai fame.

Last seen in Suryaputra Karn, she talks about the gradual changes and from being a gym alien to being a gym freak. “After a point, your body also indicates you to take up exercise. When you are young, you get away with anything. As you hit the late twenties, it’s time to take stock.” Well, she bares it all. Starting with her two-and-half hour daily and six days a week routine at the gym.

And the day begins

I always have water first thing in the morning. Sometimes it is lukewarm water with lime and at times it is water with apple cider vinegar.

Small habits that go a long way

Much before I became conscious of exercise routines and gymming, I anyway had a lot of healthy habits imbibed in me since childhood. For instance having plenty of water, having sufficient sleep. I have always made it a point to fit in seven to eight hours of sleep in my schedule. I also believe in power naps between shots.

Of diet and meal times

I am usually quite flexible and easy going with my meals, save for a few things. Breakfast, 80 per cent of the times comprises eggs in several forms, like scrambled, boiled, fried…I avoid carbs at night and go in for either masala oats, or grilled chicken, veggies or fish.

When the urge strikes

There is no point in denying yourself, because sooner or later you will give in to temptation, and binge eating will be even more harmful. So, I do allow myself junk food once in a while or give into cravings. I quite like banana chips.

Snack time

I snack on cashews and almonds, since I am not very fond of fruits. It’s only mangoes during the summer time that I crave for.

Sweet tooth? Yes, why not

That would have to be kaju katli.

Sugar rushes

I had put on a lot of weight while playing the character of Kunti for Suryaputra Karn. So, now I avoid sugar completely save for twice a week, when I allow myself cakes and pastries, since I like them even more than ice-creams. It is not possible nor healthy to cut out sugar completely from diet too.

Wrong rules of fitness

I have seen people diet all day or all week and then on their cheat days or at the end of the day, they go crazy over butter chicken and what not. This is not healthy and sustainable. Might as well have a balanced approach to getting fit. Diets are anyway not good for the body, if at all, they should be moderated.
