SOUND OF MUSIC: Ritesh D’Souza and Tara Mae

Jasmine Singh

A fresh sound, refreshing like a summer cooler, in fact, something that can be savoured in every season and at any time of the day. B.R.E.E.D, an electronic duo who performed at Kitty Su, The Lalit, Chandigarh create a world of amazing sounds, rhythm, blending in the perfect notes.

Mumbai-based underground music DJ-producer Ritesh D’Souza and Los Angeles- based Tara Mae, a classically-trained pianist and vocalist are known for a mix of future bass and classical music, and this is what makes B.R.E.E.D breed so well!

Also, the high point, about which they would love to talk at any given minute, is that theirs is the first Indian act to play at the Coachella Festival. You see a sparkle in his eyes, as Ritesh super- excitedly shares his super-exciting moments at the festival. “It was a dream come true and the crowd’s super high energy making it even more exhilarating. It was also really exciting to be performing alongside major international artistes. We were even doing sound check at the same time that ACDC was doing theirs,” he makes no effort to hide that he was feeling on the top of the world. “So would Tara be,” he quickly adds about the missing partner who couldn’t make it to the event.

Once this high energy subsides (only for a while), Ritesh drops in a little story about how B.R.E.E.D came into being. “Tara and I met back in 2005 in a club in Mumbai. We hit it off right away and our interest and passion for music connected us instantly. We started composing songs together and wrote our first track together called, Metaphor in 2005, a few months after we met and we have not even released it till this day,” Ritesh wants only to add more to the story. “It is such a gem and meaningful track that we’ve been holding onto it for the last decade, waiting for the right time to release it,” he fills in the gaps.

After 2005 though, it took years for B.R.E.E.D to really form and develop into what it is today. “Especially in regards to our music and we even feel like we have only just found our true sound in the last two years, so it has been an amazing journey and in-depth process to say the least. We have been able to get where we are now because of hard work, passion, dedication and focus,” shares Ritesh.

B.R.E.E.D has played alongside a variety of international artistes including Alesso, Howie B, Opiou, FreQ Nasty, Albin Meyers and Gaudi and has collaborated with and remixed the likes of Sizzla, Calvertron and many more.

And when it comes to defining their kind of music, they know what they’ve been at, not literally! “We consider our music to be future bass music layered with a lot of raw vocals and exotic instrumentation like orchestral strings, slightly off-beat percussion and melodic piano and synths,” he retains the technical jargon.

Ritesh and Tara Mae have been travelling with their work, but there is definitely more in the pipeline. “There is so much to do. First, we are super excited to be releasing our next 2-track EP Diamonds into Squares, which we are very happy with and excited to “unveil”. We are also focusing on really developing our live set and performing all of our tracks live, as well as focusing on tours, including a live tour. We also have a few nice collaborations in the mix, and will also be releasing another EP and some singles later on in the year towards 2016. So much to come isn’t it,” Ritesh is all jumpy and excited again.
