In the opening scene of Deadpool, Wade Wilson is running for his life, shouting ‘oh bhole gaddi start kar, jaldi kar, oh aina ne meriyan tangan pan deyniya.’ Confused? Anybody would be! Ah, well, this is the Punjabi Deadpool for you! Though the sentence literally means, ‘oh man, start the car fast or they will break my legs,’ ...in Punjabi it is bound to get a new twist.
While on the one hand, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh’s voice in the Hindi trailer is making national news, the Punjabi trailer too has managed to generate a lot of interest. With 1, 62, 987 views on YouTube, the Punjabi trailer of the American Superhero film Deadpool has attracted a lot of attention! The dialogues in the trailer, dubbed in Punjabi, are hilarious; they almost make Deadpool and his actions like ghar ki baat!
Deadpool & lassi
Picture this, Deadpool confronts a girl, “sorry maada jeha late ho gaya, tainu pata bahar kini garmi pai rahi hai, main thodi jahi thandi lassi pe ke aaya.” Deadpool and lassi, what else can you ask for!
Director Amber, who saw the trailer that has gone pretty viral on FB, can’t help laughing about it. “While you can’t stop laughing at the shoddy dubbing, the dialogues are hilarious. However, if any members of the Deadpool team were to understand the translation, they would kill someone!”
Not the first
This, however, is not the first time that a popular Hollywood movie has been dubbed into Punjabi; Fast and Furious 8, Spiderman, The Forbidden Kingdom (called Dulla Te Bhatti in Punjabi) have already been dubbed. “Fast and Furious 8 is like a super laughter riot; some of the dialogues between the protagonist and the villain are like, ‘tu ganja, tera tabbar ganja, saarey ganje... this is not called dubbing it is called ‘murdering’ a film,” says animation director Satbir, who doesn’t see any professionalism in all this. “They are done for fun and just for online viewing or sold as pirated versions.”
The names of the characters in the Punjabi dubs are always changed; Spiderman in Punjabi with 1,479,354 views is a classic example where Spiderman’s Punjabi name is Murli!
