What started as a go-to-outfit of the bridesmaids speedily became a bride’s staple.

Why? After all, when will a flat stomach and a skinny waist come to be of use?

Crop tops coupled with lehengas have been one of the few finds that have graced the runways and wedding albums alike.

“Creating a contemporary fusion look without wearing dupattas or heavy embellishments is what makes the crop top skirt trend a huge rage this festive season,” shares designer Amy Billimoria, who herself has finished creating several looks with the silhouette. Sabyasachi went all out with his very popular print-on-print versions first showcased during Lakme Fashion Summer Resort 2015. The designer’s celebrity friends hurriedly followed suit and were the millions of fans far behind? Nope. Skip the dupatta or add a sheer one, either ways it’ll work. Shares designer Eshaa Amiin, “Crop top lehengas have a certain royal appeal. They are a perfect outfit for young girls, especially with the festive season on in full swing.” A lot many swear by the comfortable easy-to-wear combination and its suitability for a destination wedding.

Warning signs—Crop top Vs choli

An off shoot of the western cropped tops, when paired with lehengas, need a few basics in place.  Further adds Mayyur, “When you opt for this combination, you have to make sure the basics are right. The length of the crop top and the skirt/lehenga has to be right and worn properly. The crop tops are not your usual cholis or blouse and are a little longer in length than the choli. The  lehengas are high waist unlike the normal lehengas you wear and look best when they are floor length. This combination of crop top and high waist lehenga has a very minimum skin show unlike that in the traditional attire.”

First and foremost

This goes without saying but would be fatal if left unsaid. Unless you are skinny and got a flat stomach, you should stay miles away the outfit.

All about colours and prints

It is totally possible to go print-on-print with this trend and sans any embellishments. Shares designer Amy, “Whilst sporting this trend keep the colour palette the highlight of the look. Use placement motifs and accessorise using jewelled belts to create a statement.”
