To a new start

Shekhar Suman

The multi-talented Shekhar Suman is back on TV with Sab TV’s new comedy show Saat Phero Ki Hera Pheri. He plays Bhupi Tandon, a 50-year-old stereotyped old-fashioned Punjabi who believes in saving rather than spending. We caught up with Shekhar Suman about the show and lots more.

You are coming back on TV after a long gap, any particular reason?

Yes, I am doing a sitcom after a very long time, maybe 15-16 years. Now sitcoms are gradually coming back and people are enjoying the humor they bring. There was also a pressure on me from fans to get back to acting. I hope, through my role, I will win the love and support of viewers across India.

What’s the change that you are seeing in the industry?

Now, the viewers have changed. They do not just care about the story; they focus on acting and direction as well.

How is it to share screen space with Swati Shah?

It has been nice to work with popular actor Swati Shah. I really admire her work.

Describe your character in the show.

Bhupi Tandon looks like a dominant Punjabi man, but within him is a very sweet-hearted and lovable person. He is liked by everyone for the way he is and that is what is inspiring for him.

Which medium do you enjoy the most, Bollywood or Television?

I would say Bollywood because films are larger than life. Serials come and go and people forget. Television has its own advantage, that is- it turns you into a soldier and it is like you are prepared for all kinds of eventualities. In films you are more relaxed and you have certain luxuries of taking an off. On the other hand, in television the show has to go on air hence, you have to be always on your toes.

If you had to tell one thing that you do not like about women, what would it be?

A nagging wife who is always suspicious and keeps questioning everything you do. I would like to have my space. I hate talkative women who are all the time doubting and questioning.

What is the secret of your fitness at this age?

I am a fitness freak. I drink four litres of lukewarm water daily and eat oats, porridge, cucumber, broccoli, bananas and sprouts. I advice all my fans to pay attention to fitness. With just this one thing you’ll feel everything else in your life is falling into place.

Which according to you is more challenging — comedy or fiction show?

Both are equally challenging. It is the audience that is the deciding factor.

Your favourite food?

Mushroom pizza and chicken salad.

What are your hobbies?

Power yoga, exercise and singing.
