Dressed in all blue asymmetrical dress, fringes in place and the thick mop of hair, cheeks blushing with the deft use of illuminators, as gorgeous Kara Khan aka Ali Asgar made an entry in front of an impatiently waiting crowd, an hour-and-a-half late, there were many who still like her adaa! Now that’s the actor Ali Asgar, who would make sure he gives his 200 per cent to every appearance he makes. The famous Dadi from Comedy Nights With Kapil, Ali is by no means taking it lightly.

Lip sync

Ali’s latest act is playing Farah Khan’s tormentor on latest Star Plus’ show Lip Sing Battle. An Indian take on the hugely popular international franchise that’s captivated 18 countries, this celeb-packed show made its first appearance on September 16. “Lip singing is one major part of the show, which also brings along the quirky side of the popular actors.” Stars like Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra and Karan Johar loved dancing to their favourite tunes on the show. “It’s no regular show; the judges are the people in the audience, who decide the winner through their loud cheers,” reveals Ali.

Being a woman

With a number of films and shows on telly, Ali has been doing the drag for a long time still; not entirely out of choice though. “That’s what the audience demands; but trust me it’s not easy to pull off a woman character being a man,” he confesses. The elaborate get-up, make-up and mannerisms have not only made Ali feel closer to women, but also develop more respect for them.

Unfortunate act

Playing Dadi on Comedy Nights with Kapil, then Nani on The Kapil Sharma Show, Ali has enjoyed huge success with the popular comedy show host and claims to have no personal grudges. “My decision to quit the show was taken before the public spat for I was not happy the way character of Nani was shaping up,” says Ali, who labels the incident between Kapil and Sunil as an unfortunate one for the entertainment industry. “It was just the timing; post that Australia tour as if everything fizzled out all at once.” However, he quashes the reports of Kapil being high-headed by not turning up on the show shoots, claiming he is not genuinely well.

Big moment

Ali Asgar has often shot with celebrities and respects them for letting comedians have fun with them. One incident that he shares is when Amitabh Bachchan was to be on the show set. It came with a long list of do’s and don’ts and everyone was wondering if over-the-top Dadi character could be part of the episode. Daring to go ahead, Ali remembers, “Bachchan Sir made me so comfortable that it was all very easy,”

As the show progressed, the Dadi asked him for a kiss and Big B obliged! Well done!
