LUDHIANA: An overwhelming number (439) of girls turned up to appear in the selection trials held by the Punjab Sports Department in 19 sports disciplines at different venues here on Tuesday.

An overwhelming number (439) of girls turned up to appear in the selection trials held by the Punjab Sports Department in 19 sports disciplines at different venues here on Tuesday.

On Monday, as many as 395 aspirants (boys) attended the trials in as many events. These trials were organised to enrol players with the sports wings run at various colleges, affiliated with the Panjab University, Chandigarh, under the residential as well as day-scholar schemes.

As, table tennis discipline did not receive any player (boy) on Monday, not even a single player reported on Tuesday in three events namely badminton, swimming besides table tennis.

Giving details, Kartar Singh, Assistant Director, Sports, Punjab and District Sports Officer, Ludhiana, said the maximum number of aspirants was registered in kabaddi. This was followed by hockey (59), football (48) and athletics (46), respectively.

The break-up of aspirants, sports disciplines wise were athletics (46), archery (9), basketball (35), boxing (15), cycling (9), football (48), gymnastics (8), hockey (59), handball (6), judo (18), kabaddi (74), kho-kho (29), lawn tennis (2), volleyball (26), weightlifting (19) and wrestling (36).

Kartar Singh said the selection panel, which watched these boys and girls during the trials, would prepare a list of selected players and submit it to the sports authorities concerned in Chandigarh, which would decide how many of them could be enrolled with the wings according to available vacancies.

“The successful players will be provided facilities such as sports kit, training and diet money of Rs200 per head per day under the residential scheme, whereas those admitted under the day-scholar scheme will be given daily diet money of Rs100 in addition to other applicable facilities. The entire process will be completed by the end of this month,” he said.
