LUDHIANA: A team of the Health Department on Wednesday conducted a check at shops under the Tobacco Control Act. Those found violating the norms were issued challans on the spot. Pictorial warning at the tobacco shops is mandatory and some shops were found violating the norm. Shops located on Ferozepur Road and Malhar Road were checked. A total of eight challans worth Rs 1,000 were issued. The department also collected two samples of pan masala and tobacco products from Chaurasia Pan Bhandar. Dr Andesh Kaur Kang, District Health Officer, said anybody found violating the rules would not be let off. TNS

Snatcher held with 6 mobile phones

Ludhiana: The Shimlapuri police have nabbed a snatcher and recovered six looted mobile phones from him. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Sudam of Surjit Nagar. The police said acting on a tip-off, a naka was laid at Gill Chowk and after intercepting the accused, he was nabbed and six mobile phones were recovered from him.

Property fraud: Man booked 

The Salem Tabri police have booked a man for committing property fraud. The accused has been identified as Agya Ram of Basti Jodhewal. Complainant Deepak Beri of New Hargobind Nagar told the police that he had signed an agreement with the accused to buy a property in Bal Singh Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, in 2016 and Rs 8 lakhs were given to the accused as token money and another Rs 4 lakh were to be given at the time of transfer of property to the complainant. He said the accused had took the remaining amount as well, but he failed to turn up for the transfer of registration of property. The police are yet to arrest the accused. — TNS

Industry for cheaper power

President of United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA) Inderjit Singh Navyug met Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal at Cheema Chowk and submitted a memorandum of demands to him. Murder accused in police remand

A local court on Wednesday sent a man accused of a double murder to one-day police remand. Gurmail Singh of Doaba Bhaini village had allegedly killed his daughter and her paramour in a fit of rage on Monday night. As per reports, his daughter had divorced her husband and had been staying in a live-in relationship with her lover. She had returned to her parental village five days ago to seek an apology and reunite with the family. The bodies have been handed over to the relatives after a postmortem examination. OC

LSCL meet in Chandigarh

The Board of Directors of Ludhiana Smart City Limited (LSCL) met in Chandigarh on Wednesday, wherein the status of various projects was reviewed. The meeting was headed by A Venu Prasad, Principal Secretary, Local Government Punjab. Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal said the meeting was aimed at discussing the status of projects under the Smart City mission. MC Additional Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal said the discussion was conducted on projects including Smart LED lights, 24x7 water supply, rooftop solar panels, Sarabha Nagar market and others. He said LSCL will take feedback from residents and special interaction sessions would be held with residents to get their ideas. Notably, it was the fourth meeting of the Board of Directors. Two years have passed since Ludhiana was selected to be developed as a Smart City, but most projects are yet to see the light of day. TNS

Four missing girls traced to city

Six days after four minor girls had gone missing from Mataur, the Mohali police on Wednesday recovered them from Ludhiana. Two youths with whom the victims had allegedly left were also arrested on kidnapping charges. The girls have been identified as Pinki (14), Rishu Kumar (15), Babita Kumar (13) and Pooja (13). While Babita and Pinki are students of a government school in Mataur, the other two minors worked as domestic help. On the complaint of victims' family members, the police had booked Ravi (20) and Manpreet (22) for kidnapping the minors. Inspector Jarnail Singh, SHO, Mataur police station, said the location of the girls was traced after one of the girls had placed a call to her relatives. The SHO said the minors had sublet a room at a local guest house in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, and had been staying there for the past six days with two youths. "A police party was sent to rescue the girls and is on its way back to Mohali. Medical examination of minors will be conducted once they return," said Jarnail Singh. The police said the accused claimed that they had eloped with girls on the pretext of marrying them. TNS
