Ludhiana, February 20

Environmental activists have hailed the decision of the Punjab Pollution Control Board to award whistleblowers with cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, who would report the release of effluents from factories into the borewells.

The board has also announced that the identity of the informer in these cases would also be kept secret.

Dr Amandeep Singh Bains said there should be no water harvesting system in industries because the chances of misuse were higher.

He said, “Anyone who sees discharge of effluents should report it. A handful of industrialists and colonisers could be putting life of 50 lakh people in grave danger.”

Col Jasjit Gill from Let’s Clean Ludhiana Foundation said report related to such matters kept coming. It is a step in the right direction by the pollution board.

President CICU Upkar Singh Ahuja said, “We have been promoting use of green manufacturing and green energy. Every industry must adopt green practices for a sustainable future.”
