Thieves broke into a house in the Geeta Colony area and decamped with Rs 1 lakh in cash and gold jewellery worth lakhs in broad daylight today.

The theft took place at around 11 am when there was nobody present in the house of Shivdeep Arora in Street Number 3. Arora had gone to Ludhiana in connection with his job while his mother, a schoolteacher, had gone to the school. Shivdeep’s pregnant wife has been staying at her paternal house for the past some time. A nephew of Shivdeep, who lives with them, had gone to the school.

The theft came to light when Shivdeep’s nephew, Gautam returned from school at around 1 pm. He found the lock of a room broken. He called up his uncle and informed him about the theft.

A police team, led by SHO Inderjit Singh Boparai, reached the spot. A team of forensic experts and a dog squad were pressed into service. The police officials said it appeared the thieves entered the house from the roof. They believed the theft had been committed by someone who was acquainted with the family and was aware of the place where the cash and jewellery were kept. The thieves broke the lock of only one room where the cash and jewellery were kept by the family.

Shivdeep said the thieves stole Rs 95,000 in cash and gold jewellery weighing around 70 grams. The police have registered a case against unidentified persons. The SHO said the police had been trying to obtain footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the nearby houses to get a clue to the thieves.

It is the second theft taking place within the past six days here. Earlier, thieves had stolen Rs 3 lakh in cash and gold jewellery worth lakhs from a house in Aatam Nagar in broad daylight on September 14.
