LUDHIANA: The auto gang allegedly duped a couple of cash and valuables. The complainant, Tarlok Singh, a resident of BRS Nagar, said on March 10, he, along with his wife, hired an auto-rickshaw from the railway station to their place in BRS Nagar.

Apart from the driver, two passengers were already sitting in the auto. After going a few miles, the driver asked us to take another auto as his auto had developed some snag. The moment the driver and the two passengers left the spot, he found his purse containing Rs 10,000 and important documents missing. He suspected that the auto driver and the decoy passengers stole his purse. The police have launched a probe. TNS

Undertrial flees, cop booked 

Ludhiana: An undertrial in an illicit liquor smuggling case fled from police custody on the court premises following which head constable Amarjit Singh was booked by the Division No. 5 police for showing negligence on duty. According to the FIR, accused Sudhir Rishi Dev had surrendered in the court and he was put in the custody of Amarjit. He escaped while being taken out of the cell for photograph. TNS

5 booked on gambling charge

Ludhiana: The police have booked five persons on the charge of gambling in separate cases in the city. In the first case, the police booked Narinder Kohli and Sooraj Kumar, both residents of BRS Nagar; Vipan. a resident of Railway Colony; and Sunil, a resident of BRS Nagar. They were caught by the police while gambling near the Oriental cinema. In another case, the police caught Pardeep Kumar Shah of Dholewal on the charge of gambling. TNS

I-T surveys Navyug Enterprizes

Ludhiana: The officials from the Income Tax Department from Range 1 conducted a survey at Navyug Namdhari Enterprizes, a unit in Focal Point, which deals in cycle parts and agriculture equipment. The survey was conducted under the instructions of Principal Commissioner R Bhama and Additional Commissioner Rohit Mehra on Tuesday. Sources said the department officials had a doubt of tax evasion by the firm, which reportedly made huge sales in the recent times. But as far as taxes were concerned, very nominal amount was paid to the department. Not just this, there are about 50 other such firms in the city, which are under the radar of the I-Tax Department and anytime, these can be “surveyed”.  Till the filing of the report, the survey on Navyug Namdhari Enterprizes was on. The department’s teams were accessing financial records and computers of the company. 

BJP workers burn power bills

Vice-president of district unit of BJP here, Parminder Mehta, along with others burnt the electricity bills at Daresi against the exorbitant rates of power in Punjab.  Mehta asked the government to immediately provide relief to power consumers as before polls, Congress leaders had claimed that the rates of power in Punjab would be reduced if they come to power. Mehta said forget about reduced rates, the government had increased the rates of power tariff. He said consumers were getting bills worth Rs 1,600- Rs 1,700 for using just 90-100 units of power. A consumer Pawan Kwatra said he had closed his small unit, but was still getting power bill over Rs 2,200. Mehta said many consumers were receiving bills in exorbitant amounts and this was sheer burden on poor consumers. 

Proclaimed offender arrested 

The Jagraon police have arrested a woman wanted by the police in two separate cases of fraud. The accused was declared a proclaimed offender and has been identified as Karamjit Kaur of Chaunkiman near Jagraon.  She was arrested by a police team from Kaunke Kalan police chowki following a tip-off on Monday.  ASI Gursewak Singh said the police received a tip-off that a woman wanted by the police has been spotted in the area. “Following this, the police carried out a raid and arrested her from Jagraon-Kaunke Kalan link road,” the ASI said, further adding that Karamjit was wanted by the police in two separate cases of fraud and cheating registered against her at Raikot Sadar and Jagraon Sadar police stations. He said she was absconding since May 2012, when a case under Sections 420, 120 B was registered against her for duping a man of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of sending him abroad.  The accused was produced by the police before a local court today which sent her to judicial custody.
