Blood donated during camp scrutinised for various diseases

Mandi Ahmedgarh: Scrutiny of reports on the diagnosis of the samples of blood donated during the blood donation camps has helped in the detection of pathogens of various diseases among residents of the area.

Recognising the significance such study of reports, social, educational and civic bodies of the region have announced to launch a coordinated movement to follow up and educate people about causes and consequences of various diseases, including hepatitis, diabetes, gastroenteritis and renal ailments.

The decision was taken during the concluding session of a function held by the Social Welfare Organisation to distribute the reports of regular blood donors of the area. Tarsem Garg, organisation head, presided over the function and Dr Sunit Hind, president, Rotary Club, was the keynote speaker. Addressing a gathering of office-bearers and activists of various organizations, speakers Dr Sunit Hind and Dr Jyoti Kapoor, a pathologist at the Malerkotla Civil Hospital, said hepatitis, diabetes and certain renal diseases had emerged as silent killers in the recent past because the pathogens of these ailments were not detected timely. Hind claimed that a large number of blood donors had been saved from dreaded diseases after the infection was detected during the testing of samples of blood donated during the camps organised by the Social Welfare Organisation, Lions Club and Rotary Club. “Having realised that some of the suspected carriers might ignore the reports regarding the presence of pathogens in their blood, office-bearers and activists of various organisations have announced to coordinate with officials of various blood banks for gathering information about the infected,” said Hind.

Stressing on the need for early detection and efficacious treatment of the diseases, speakers said more than 500 million carriers of virus and pathogens in the sub-continent and a substantial number of the suspected cases were being detected randomly during the blood donation camps. Office-bearers of various organisations led by Municipal Council former president Ravinder Puri, Rotary Club secretary Ravinder Sharma, Lions Club president Inderpal Singh Walia and Social Welfare Organisation Chairman Dr Rajinder Mittal said the confirmation of tests and treatment of the suspected cases of infection would be undertaken for free. —TNS
