From freedom fabric to fashion clothing, Khadi has come a long way and is considered a chic thing today. Once a dowdy sartorial symbol of India’s independence movement, Khadi is now trendy and makes the cash registers ringing.

The fabric is attracting a lot of office-going youngsters and is an alternative for georgette, chiffon and net.

“I have fallen in love with Khadi silk. It can be used for both casual and formal wear. I like simple kurtas for office wear and khadi silk suits with little block printing for formal occasions,” says Namita Malik, a bank professional.

“Classic khadi kurtas for men and women are much in demand. We have witnessed a growth in khadi business and have grown almost three times in the past five years. The market is definitely growing faster than the production capacity,” said a store manager from a popular brand dealing in khadi.

“I have done a lot of fusion in khadi with various contemporary designs. People’s mindset towards khadi has changed, especially when they get varieties in terms of western designs and cuts. Khadi silk is in great demand these days and young girls are even getting anarkalis and long skirts stitched out of this fabric,” Roopika, a city based designer, said.

Another designer based in the city said: “Those who want a simple look with a deep sense of Gandhian aesthetics will enjoy khadi in its natural form. Khadi in itself is a complete look and does not need embellishment. If a customer wants a bling and shimmer, then I advise her to go for satins and chiffons. Khadi in its original form with a little hand embroidery looks the best and is best suited for professionals.”

Khadi is not restricted to clothes; it has found space in various crafts, shoes and home décor as well. Silk khadi, available in a variety of hues and shades, adds a touch of elegance to any space. Cushion covers, mats, tablecloths, curtains or sofa covers everything is available in khadi.

The fabric of ages is here to stay and rule not only through political attires, but through national and international fashion scenes.
