Ludhiana, November 18

The Deshbhakt Yaadgar Society and Congress activists from Atam Nagar ward today observed the 88th martyrdom day of Lala Lajpat Rai.

Senior Congress leader Krishan Kumar Bawa and society vice-president Jasbir Singh Jassal had organised the state-level event at Atam Nagar here.

The organisers honoured terrorism victims, freedom fighters and senior Congress leaders on the occasion.

Bawa said the life of Lala Lajpat Rai was an inspiration for the generations to come. Lala Lajpat Rai joined the Congress and devoted his life to the country. He supported the non-cooperation movement by Mahatma Gandhi and struggled for the country’s freedom. Rai was beaten up by lathis and the ‘Lion of Punjab’ succumbed to his injuries on November 17, 1928.

“Rai had visited the US and Japan in 1914, but he returned in 1920 to India to take a part in the freedom struggle. Lalaji’s father was a teacher who believed in the Muslim religion and his grandfather a believer of Hinduism,” said Bawa.
