Riot victims decry denial of justice

LUDHIANA: The 1984 Sikh Katleaam Peerit Welfare Society has flayed the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre for denying justice to the victims and the kin of 1984 anti-Sikh riots even as a special investigation team (SIT) was set up nearly two years ago.

The 1984 Sikh Katleaam Peerit Welfare Society has flayed the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre for denying justice to the victims and the kin of 1984 anti-Sikh riots even as a special investigation team (SIT) was set up nearly two years ago.

Addressing mediapersons here today, Surjit Singh, president and Gurdeep Kaur, president of the women wing of the body, said the SIT had failed to submit any report to the government so far while the guilty persons, including Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar and Kamal Nath, were roaming freely.

The society took a note and welcomed the conviction of 47 police personnel of Pilibhit in UP for their involvement in fake encounters of 10 Sikh youth. They said the CBI court dispensed justice to families of the victims even though it took 25 years.

“On the other hand, the 1984-riot victims and their families are still waiting for the culprits to be given punishment even after more than 30 years,” they said.

They said if the Modi government or the SIT continued to drag their feet and justice was denied to the riot victims, they would sit on dharna at the residence of the PM in Delhi.
