Social organisations block Ludhiana-Chandigarh Road

SAMRALA: A number of social organisations of the area today blocked traffic on Ludhiana-Chandigarh Road at the main chowk at Samrala and burnt effigy of the state government for not repairing the Samrala-Khanna road from Machhiwara and the Samrala-Biza road as the commuters were facing hardships due to big potholes on the roads.

A number of social organisations of the area today blocked traffic on Ludhiana-Chandigarh Road at the main chowk at Samrala and burnt effigy of the state government for not repairing the Samrala-Khanna road from Machhiwara and the Samrala-Biza road as the commuters were facing hardships due to big potholes on the roads.

The protesters led by Advocate Narinder Sharma, Advocate Jaspreet Singh and Advocate Daljeet Shahi alleged that in spite of repeated appeals to the authorities concerned to repair the roads, no action had been taken so far.

They said a number of accidents had taken place and a vehicles got stuck in potholes time and again. The commuters had to face difficulties while crossing the main chowk. Long queues of vehicles were witnessed on both sides of the road and the traffic had to be diverted through other routes.

The protesters said they had blocked the Samrala-Khanna road for some time. However, no official or political leader turned up to hear them. Then they blocked the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road on the main chowk, resulting in blockade at the roads. The protesters stated that they had brought the matter in the notice of Akali Dal-BJP candidate, Santa Singh Umaidpuri.

Umaidpuri had assured that the work on the road would start in a week but the matter was still pending. After two hours of traffic jam, Naib, tehsildar, Machhiwara, reached the spot. He took memorandum from the protesters and lifted the blockade.

When Umaidpuri was contacted in this regard, he said he had promised to start the repair of road within one month. He said financial approval for these roads had come up and the repair work roads would start in three or four days.
