Mandi Ahmedgarh: Gloom descended over the region due to the sudden death of youth Congress leader Gobind Singh Khatra, a native of Khatra village in Payal subdivision near here. National Students Union of India General Secretary Gobind Khatra was the convener of the ‘Jaggo Panjab Movement Yatra’ launched by Captain Amarinder Singh before the recent Assembly elections in the state. Office-bearers and activists of various organisations, Municipal Council president Suraaj Mohammad, Lions Club president Inderpal Singh Walia, Rotary Club president Dr Sunit Hind, and city Congress president Vikas Tandon condoned the death. 16-kg poppy husk recovered from truck

Khamano: The Khamano police claimed to have recovered 16 kg of poppy husk from a truck at a naka near Khamano and have booked the truck driver. The accused has been identified as Manpreet Singh of Mal Majra village. Khamano SHO Shamsher Singh said a police party, led by ASI Mandeep Singh, had laid a naka near the Khamano T-point and a tip-off was received that a truck carrying poppy husk was coming from the Rajasthan side. The police team signalled the truck to stop and the driver fled the spot. Meanwhile, the police impounded the truck and recovered 16 kg of poppy husk on search. The SHO said a case under the NDPS Act was registered against Manpreet Singh and the police are conducting raids to arrest the accused. OC

Man held with 50-gm heroin

Ludhiana: The city police have arrested a drug peddler and recovered 50-gram heroin from him. The accused has been identified as Honey Chopra, a resident of Gurmail Nagar. The police said during a routine checking near Civil Hospital, a person was stopped for checking and during the search of his belongings, narcotics were recovered from him. The accused was on his way to deliver drugs to his clients.

Minor girl kidnapped 

The city police have booked a man on the charge of kidnapping a minor girl. The accused has been identified as Vipan of Dholewal. Complainant Jai Parkash of UP told the police that his 14-year-old daughter left home on April 5 and later came to know that Vipan had kidnapped her on the pretext of marrying her. The police have launched a manhunt. In a similar case, a 17-year-old migrant girl also went missing under mysterious circumstances. The girl’s father, Sewa Lal, a native of UP, told the police that his daughter was kidnapped by someone on March 30. The police have launched a probe in the case. 

Traders discuss grievances  

Punjab Industry and Trade Forum members held a meeting with PSPCL Chief Engineer Paramjit Singh at Durga Dass Memorial Conference Hall here on Tuesday. Paramjit Singh discussed the two-part tariff matter and explained it to the industrialists. Navyug said industrialists were getting costly electricity after the implementation of the two-part tariff. “They have to pay Rs 9 to Rs 10 per unit, while Chief Minister Captain Amarinder had promised the industrialists to provide electricity at Rs 5 per unit.” It was demanded that octroi should be abolished.  Industrialist Rajeev Jain said 220-KV sub-station was required in the Janta Nagar division and the Chief Engineer assured to look into the matter.
