A youth of Machhiwara and son of the State Congress Mahila Brigade president reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself dead. The deceased has been identified as Jai Singh (26).

According to information, the youth was a drug addict. He was the only son of Manpreet Kaur, chief of State Congress Mahila Brigade. His family told the police that Jai Singh, who was married, was addicted to drugs. They were trying to admit him to a drug de-addiction centre and his mother had gone to Anandpur Sahib to consult doctors in this regard. Jai Singh was upset over unavailability of drugs.

Around 9.45 am on Thursday, Jai Singh’s wife and sister went to a religious place to pay their obeisance. The youth and his father were home. After some time, Jai Singh locked himself in his room and shoot himself dead with his father’s rifle. His father, who is an ex-serviceman, heard the sound of gunshot and rushed to the youth’s room. He broke the door and found his son lying in a pool of blood.

Jai Singh was rushed to Civil Hospital, Machhiwara, where he was declared dead on arrival. The deceased is survived by a minor daughter and wife. Machhiwara SHO Surinderpal Singh no case had been registered. The body will be handed over to his guardians after post-mortem, he added.
