A Havildar posted at the City Police Station shot himself with his service rifle at the police station on Thursday evening. The deceased has been identified as Baljinder Singh of Barundi village in Ludhiana district.

Though the police are yet to ascertain the exact sequence of events, a family dispute over property was reported to be the reason behind the alleged suicide.

Investigations revealed Baljinder had allegedly shot himself with his service rifle after writing a suicide note, when he was on duty at the police station today. The bullet pierced through his abdomen just below the chest. He was shifted to a multispeciality hospital in Ludhiana after the local doctors found his condition serious. He succumbed to injuries later.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Amandeep Singh Brar and SHO Ranjit Singh are carrying out the probe. Brar told the media that a note was received from the victim which suggested that he had taken the extreme step owing to a family dispute over property. Though the authenticity of the suicide note is yet to be verified, prima facie it points out that the victim was upset after he lost a case regarding ownership of a piece of land.
