The Dugri police claimed to have nabbed a thief who had stolen goods from the Easyday store situated on Pakhowal Road. The thief attacked the policemen who were chasing him.
When the thief jumped into Jawaddi Canal to escape from the police, ASI Jagtar Singh and Constable Gurmel Singh chased him in the canal and nabbed him. He has been identified as Sachu Paswan, a native of Bihar who at present lives on Railway Station Road.
Mohit Sood, an employee of the store, on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Dugri police that Sachu had stolen goods from the store. When he tried to open the safe containing cash, the theft alarm went off in the head office at Malaysia from where he got an alert. “When I intercepted the accused, he was standing on the stairs. Before I could catch hold of him, he hurled an iron lock at me and fled the store on my motorcycle. The thief also cut the wires of the CCTV cameras before fleeing,” he told the police.
The ADCP, Sandeep Sharma, said acting on a tip-off, a police party intercepted the accused at Jawaddi village on Wednesday. Sachu also attacked the police party but he was finally nabbed. However, one of his accomplices, Sanjan, escaped.
Apart from registering a theft case, an attempt-to-murder case was also slapped on the accused.
Sharma said appreciation certificates would be given to the brave cops, ASI Jagtar Singh, Constable Gurmel Singh, Constable Pardeep Singh and Home Guards jawan Shyam Lal.
After the arrest of the thief, the police recovered three motorcycles from his possession, including the one stolen by him from the Easyday store.
